We strive to make treatment as effective, safe, and convenient as possible, and we believe patient education is vital to successful treatment. To help you learn more about Invisalign and make the most informed choice possible on your orthodontic treatment, we've pulled together a few of the most common questions we hear about Invisalign along with their answers.

Frequently Asked Questions About Invisalign

So... what is Invisalign, exactly?

Invisalign is a revolutionary orthodontic treatment system offering an alternative to braces. While braces use metal brackets and wires to straighten the teeth, Invisalign instead uses a series of clear, removable plastic trays called aligners that fit directly over the dental arch. Invisalign aligners are virtually invisible when worn and completely removable, which means you take them out to eat, drink, brush, and floss.

What benefits does Invisalign provide?

Invisalign comes with a number of advantages over braces, and many patients prefer it for its convenience:

  • Virtually Invisible: Because the aligners are almost impossible to see when worn, almost no one will know you're straightening your teeth. You won't have to worry about having braces in pictures, at major social events, or at work.
  • No Dietary Changes: You take the aligners out to eat, so unlike braces, you won't have to monitor your diet for hard or sticky foods.
  • Easy Oral Hygiene: Oral hygiene is as easy as ever, and you never have to worry about special tools like floss threaders.
  • Comfort: Invisalign aligners are smooth to the touch, so they don't cause the same scratches and scrapes that braces do.

How long do I wear the aligners?

You'll wear your aligners for 20-22 hours a day, removing them only to eat, drink, brush, and floss. You'll switch to a new set of aligners every 2 weeks.

Can I chew gum with Invisalign?

Gum can damage the aligners, so you'll need to take them out if you want to chew it.

What about smoking?

Smoking can warp and discolor aligners, so you'll have to take them out if you need to smoke.

How do I keep them clean?

Cleaning Invisalign aligners is easy – just brush them with a toothbrush every time you take them out and occasionally soak them in a glass with a denture cleaning tablet.

How often do I need to have appointments during treatment?

Generally, we'll schedule checkup appointments every five or six weeks, although that number will depend on your specific case.

How long does treatment take overall?

Your treatment time depends on your orthodontic condition, and treatment times vary greatly from patient to patient. Generally, though, Invisalign treatment lasts somewhere between 6 to 18 months.

Can kids get Invisalign?

Sure! If all their teeth have grown in, anyone is eligible for Invisalign.

Does it hurt?

As with any orthodontic treatment, you may experience some soreness or discomfort while you're adjusting to Invisalign – but that usually lasts only a few days. Generally speaking, Invisalign doesn't "hurt."

Do I need a retainer afterwards?

As with all orthodontic treatments, you'll have to wear a retainer after the active phase of your treatment to prevent your teeth from moving back to their old positions. That said, you're in luck – as an Invisalign patient, you can just use your last pair of aligners as retainers!
